Creative Appeal

10 Steps for adding creative appeal in the Architectural Detail of your Home

There are many things to consider when designing and building a new home. Throughout this process several opportunities will present themselves, which create a significant difference in the architectural quality and character of space your home. Considering these factors will significantly affect your new homes resale value by making your home more marketable a future homebuyer should you decide to sell.

1. Windows, windows and more windows through main living spaces in your home. Focus on adding sidelights, French and or atrium doors. Adding these features to your new home will create the appearance of space and will brighten your home during the day by the use of natural light. Furthermore, the effects of windows and glass doors will make your home more interesting by bringing the outside in.

2. By the use of natural light in combination with creative lighting during the evening hours, your new home will offer an appealing comfort to you and people that visit. Try using recessed fixtures, set about five feet apart in a foyer, hall or great room. Install dimmers along with your new lighting to create a balance in light as the sun goes down.

3. Even though you may not need a bonus space or even a basement, consider utilizing one. These types of rooms often become the most interesting part of a house. They are also great selling tools, should you decide to move one day.

4. Make use of your attic space easily accessible. If not for storage, then for a future living space. No one says you have to build in your attic space immediately, but wouldn’t it be great if you had that option?

5. Ceilings. What about them? Think creatively when designing the ceiling for your new home. Use varied heights in major spaces and where appropriate throughout your home. By using diverse ceiling designs, your room will offer you other occupants, and visitors a more comfortable living experience. Rooms that offer these ceilings amenities will appear more spacious and provide another creature comfort.

6. Another design factor that one might want to consider is using low walls or colonnades separating but still joining room areas in applicable areas. This will create a spacious feel by making the rooms flow together yet still providing separation.

7. Use ornate trim work to accentuate major living spaces. This will add interest and richness to a larger room. By doing this, larger rooms perceived quality would be intensified.

8. Decks, patios, porches and other exterior design elements signify the perceived appearance interior of your home. If they are not inviting or interesting potential buyers will assume that the interior of you home is the same. Remember the outside will determine the way people will perceive the inside.

9. Plan for noise when designing your home. Nothing is more annoying than going to sleep only to be abruptly awaked by an air conditioner or heat pump that was brilliantly placed under your bedroom window. Been there done that don’t recommend it. Design laundry rooms, heat pumps, and other noise creating devices away from rooms meant for comfort.

10. Make room for adequate closet space. Nothing is worse than a nice home with closet space designed for a playhouse. Make sure your house plans include a generous amount of closet space. Tip - home buying decisions are indirectly made by women. Closet space is important!
